Map #16: Rivers and Roads: the Oldest Map in China, c. 239 BCE

Scores of smaller rivers drain into the Wei River near X’ian, making the area one of the country’s most productive agricultural regions for centuries. As a result four  ancient Chinese kingdoms made their capital near X’ian on the Wei River:
Zhou Dynasty   (1046 – 256 BCE )     [Ancient Greece ]
Qin dynasty           (221–207 BCE )      [Ancient Greece ]
Han Dynasty     (206 BCE–220 CE)      [Roman Empire ]
Tang  Dynasty            ( 618–907 CE)   [Early Middle Ages]

The Shaanxi History Museum in X’ian ends with the Tang dynasty

The Terra Cotta Army is one of X’ian’s most spectacular sites dating from 221-209 BCE

Maps in China likely pre-date this one rescued from a tomb, but historical treasures above ground were destroyed by the Cultural Revolution.
