Jewish Science in Iberia & Provence

Iberia and Provence were the centers of Jewish scientific learning from the eleventh to the fifteenth century.  Prominent astronomers included Abraham ibn Ezra (1092-1093 CE),   Abraham bar Ḥiyya, (aka Savasorda), ca. 1134 , Levi ben Gerson ( 1288;-1344).

Astronomy was a discipline in which Jewish scholars of this region were especially prominent. However drawings of constellations such as these were rare.

Provence–and the cities of Montpellier and Periginan were home to a large Jewish scientific community in the fourteenth century, when these drawings were made. Although the map may have been drawn in this community or the growing Jewish community of Barcelona.
