Balkhi Tradition

There are several different traditions of medieval Arabic mapmaking; the Balkhi school is one of the most well-known, named for Persian scholar Abu Zayd Ahmed ibn Sahl Balkhi (850-934 CE).

Al Hawqal 

Muḥammad Abū’l-Qāsim Ibn Ḥawqal (d. 978 CE) was an Arab Muslim traveler and mapmaker with a famous depiction of the Caspian Sea. A Ḥawqal world map appears below.

This excellent 2016 book has a comprehensive account of the medieval Islamic maps as well as more recent ones. Contains some neologisms.
